Acupuncture, a fundamental therapy in Chinese medicine, has been used for more than 3,500 years. Studies indicate that acupuncture can improve fertility when combined with modern fertility treatments. Studies show that acupuncture increases blood flow to the uterus and helps release the body´s endorphins, which play a critical role in overall body balance.

Acupuncture Increases Uterine Blood Supply

Researchers showed (with help of monitoring blood flow), that applying acupuncture to the points specified for female infertility increases blood supply to the uterus. This is important because the increased blood supply can cause thickening of the endometrial lining of the uterus. And it is the part of the uterus that receives and nourishes the fertilised egg and plays an important fundamental first step to establishing a pregnancy. The endometrial lining was monitored by ultrasound and thickening was confirmed. In fact, the studies show that acupuncture fertility treatments could be just as effective at causing endometrial thickening as traditional estrogens therapy; the standard treatment for a thin endometrial lining in modern medicine.

Acupuncture Therapy for Fertility Nearly Doubles Pregnancy Rates

In a large study in Germany, acupuncture therapy for fertility shown to nearly double the clinical pregnancy rates for fertility patients undergoing IVF treatment. Acupuncture increases the number of retrieved eggs, their maturity and quality. Those are key factors necessary for successful IVF treatment.  The dramatic increase in the pregnancy rate strongly suggests fertility acupuncture has a powerful additive effect when used to complement IVF treatment.

Acupuncture May Help Male Infertility Too

Additional scientific literature suggests that acupuncture may also play a positive role in the treatment of male infertility - the problem of allergies to partner´s sperm experienced by some women. It can also reduce the deformations in sperm, while increasing (but not normalise) sperm count, vitality and speed.

Fertility Acupuncture Therapy Could Be Right for You

Acupuncture has no side effects. Acupuncture needles are very small and cause less discomfort than a simple blood draw. The positive effects of acupuncture vastly outweigh any concerns over the procedure.

An acupuncturist is an important adjunct to the core services provided by our fertility team. Acupuncture fertility treatments are another good example of the integrative approach used at ReproGenesis, combining complementary and alternative medicine therapies with more traditional infertility treatments.

We recommend starting traditional Chinese medicine treatment 3 to 4 months before you plan to undergo egg retrieval. We have acupuncturist we use regularly whom we recommend highly; however, you are welcome to use your own acupuncturist if you prefer.

Acupuncture before embryo transfer

At this stage, acupuncture is very beneficial, it helps with the enlargement of the cervix opening in order to ease the transfer of the embryo into the uterus.  It also helps to calm the patient and thus release the uterus, so it is less likely during the transfer that the patient experiences spasms and uterine contractions, and this helps to the embryo implantation. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, we work with qi strengthening of the spleen to keep the embryo, the liver passes and the blood is nourished and it leads to calming of the spirit.

Acupuncture after embryo transfer

After embryo transfer, it is important to help with blood circulation in the uterus, keep the embryo there and nourish it, so embryo is properly developing.  The uterus is relaxed to prevent contractions. After a classical acupuncture, the ear acupuncture follows and the Chinese herbal mixture (dang gui shao yao san) will be applied for 14 days, thus the pregnancy test. This strengthens the kidneys, spleen and thus the qi, the blood and the spirit is calmed.

Chinese medicine complements a thorough treatment offered by an IVF clinic since it uses a strictly individual approach to each and every woman. Individual approach is a priority and a must. By respecting all of your individual factors, Chinese medicine increases your chances of getting pregnant.
